So this is who I am …

I’m a litigation specialist based in Auckland, New Zealand. I started my own practice as a barrister over 50 years ago and, since then, I have appeared in hundreds of court cases at every level of the New Zealand legal system as well as in a few overseas jurisdictions.

My CV (accessible in the side-bar) lists many of the cases in which I have been involved over the years, including appearances in the Privy Council and the Supreme Court of New Zealand.

My main area of interest is public law, including administrative law and constitutional law; but I have conducted numerous cases of other kinds including: civil litigation, commercial litigation, disciplinary tribunal hearings, appeals, criminal cases and extradition procedures.

In 2003, I was admitted to the inner bar (then Queen’s Counsel) which means I am now a King’s Counsel with over 20 years’ experience at that level of seniority.

In 2024, I was invited by the government to participate as a commissioner in the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Lessons Learned from the COVID-19 Response. I accepted that invitation and was later appointed chair of the Inquiry, a task that is due to be completed by the end of February 2026.

Although the Covid Inquiry is keeping me fairly busy at present, I am still accepting instructions for new cases, and you are welcome to contact me to discuss any need you may have for legal representation. I am also able to act as a mediator or arbitrator if required.

I have always enjoyed the challenges of legal practice and continue to do so. It is a great privilege to be appointed to act as another person’s counsel, and I propose to keep acting in that capacity for as long as I reasonably can. Please don’t hesitate to give me a call if you think I may be able to assist.
